Mei Gongqing Chapter Index

《媚公卿》林家成

Mei Gongqing (The Bewitching Courtier) by Lin Jiacheng

cover

Update: I have received Lin Jia Cheng’s express consent to translate this novel. It is illegal to take my translations without permission or to use it for monetary gains.

This is a ‘rebirth’ story where Chen Rong, the heroine, finds her second chance at life after burning herself to death. Set in the Eastern Jin era when bureaucrats and their lofty yet equally hypocritical and oppressive ideas once ruled the empire, Chen Rong is made to use her past life’s experience to survive and hopefully find happiness this time around.

Yes, it’s over 200 chapters -_- so don’t ask me what I’m thinking. It’s not often I finish something this long let alone finding it lovely. But there you have it. It was such a lovely read from beginning to end. For once, the heroine sticks out like a sore thumb not because she’s an alien from the future, but because there are simply outcasts in any era in time. She can’t help who she is, she tries to conform, but she nevertheless knows herself better than anyone else and admirably stands by her choice. A serious plot that is nevertheless scattered with gaiety, a winsome OTP, and an ending that somehow manages to pull away happy. Check, check, and check.

All aboard!

  1. Hi Hamster,

I have been lurking in the shadows of Shusheng Bar and have silently visited your site but I can’t remain quiet any longer! I am ecstatic to hear that you are going to translate this! I can’t wait for the updates. This book is insanely long but I love it very much. When it comes to novels of this length, I usually abandon ship at around the 80% mark because it feels like you already know what’s going to be happening (e.g. Chu Wang Fei and Gu Fang Bu Zi Shang). Those were good pieces too and very entertaining, but they started getting draggy. Not this though! It was interesting through and through. I loved all three of the male leads and the female protagonist as well. I would love to re-read the novel but it is so long and I am a turtle when it comes to reading Chinese so I will have to rely on you.

Thank you so much for your hard work!

    • oh my “I loved all three of the male leads and the female protagonist as well.” there are three male leads? yummy.. ^^

anyway I can’t visit shushengbar website, anyone know what happen? can you open it from your end? T_T

      • I was able to last night but not this morning. Sometimes the server goes wonky. Peanuts will know better, and she can also ask Chancy who is the real webmistress of SSB. I hope the bills were paid 😅

    • Hi Jingle, teehee, I also like all three male leads, not that I ship them all, but that is where I think this author did a great job. This is a heroine who clearly knows who she loves and what she wants out of life, so the other male leads are non viable options but they are still written with such care and sympathetic strokes that I feel for them all in different ways.

I was silently balking when I saw the page count but I pressed on bcoz it was the only thing that piqued my interest out of the solid dozen I downloaded to my phone. I’m glad we agree on this one!

  3. Hello Hamster!

I always enjoy reading your translations. They feel so smooth and natural. I got really excited reading your translations then there was this little thought bubble in my head, why does Mei Gong Qing sound so familiar? So I went to check on shusheng bar and OMG! I read the epilogues for this book before and kind of disliked it. Haha. But I cannot link the exaggerated epilogues with the interesting writing in the earlier chapters! Maybe I will actually like this novel with your translations. ❤ All the best on your new project!

    • Hi Decembi, I also don’t like the epilogues. They’re kinda silly and I don’t really care for the conceited children that much. I can’t be sure if I even finished all 38 of them (seriously, 38 outtakes?!) The only outtakes I liked were the first few on the 2nd male lead.

I won’t lie, this author exaggerates and repeats herself a bit to hammer the point home 😅 and she abuses the exclamation point ! like crazy. but the overall story is way better than the outtakes.

Thanks for your praises~ it means a lot coming from you since you are a wonderful writer yourself. If you end up hating MGQ it’s okay. I won’t feel hurt haha.

  5. Hi! Thank you so much for your translation! This is another interesting one and I can’t wait for the next chapter!
I read your comment and feel like I’m gonna love this one! I prefer the heroine who has purpose and not one of those “who I’m going to choose” type of girl.
So yeah…really excited for this series!
Thank you again for pick this up! I’m on for the long ride!

    • Hi~ *waves*
Well I dunno about her having a purpose. She just wants a happy life this time around, so not big aspirations or anything… But like I said, she knows what she wants and doesn’t let fate completely control her. Very strong and admirable.

      • Haa Sorry if I’m misleading (my english is not that good.) What I mean is that when she decides to do something, she sticks to it. And not someone who is easily swayed by those around her. Let’s just say she does things with full determination. Well…that’s the type of heroine I hope she is… =w=… does it make sense? LOL

  9. I heard that her ex is not our lead which make I super happy. I have read other novel before and even after another chance the heroine still fall for her ex, which really annoy me. I was like common women he betray you, and you still have the heart to love him. If it were me, I wouldn’t even glance at him. As for this novel not that I hate her ex, but I feel like she deserve to have a better ending. It’s true that she is quite evil back in her previous life, but I still fell for her. I can relate to her, and hope that the other guy is actually our lead. Which will make me scream like a crazy person with tears of happiness.

    • it was easy for an outsider to tell the other person: stop loving him, he is not worth it. you might feel that those heroines are annoying, but i have to tell you, it’s not that easy to erase someone we are deeply in love with. once we really fall for someone, even whe have another chance, we will easily fall for him again, despite everything.

  10. Once I started reading this and can’t take a break. Never thought that I would finish all 50 chapters within a day, given that I’m not a fast reader when it comes to English translated for Chinese novel >//<.

Thank you so much for this nice translation ❤

        • For sure!! You are lovely for taking on these projects and sharing your translations. I am on chapter 15 now I think. I wanted to skip ahead to that one juicy chapter but alas, not yet. In time… in time… also watching the drama that shall not be named. It’s better than I expected. I am actually watching it daily. Haha.

          • Ahaha what juicy chapter are you talking about? You can’t mean the really controversial one? I anticipate getting there next month -_-

Oh god, not only am I watching it daily I am watching it twice sometimes. It’s quite bad.

            • Yup. That one. Can’t wait to see your translations on it. Bahahaha.

I haven’t done twice yet on the drama. But am watching the two ep daily and looking at the previews to see what’s happening next. Mark is nailing it for me. Although am not a fan of his wardrobe. I am all for black but to me, it’s too much fabric and sleeves (unlike some of the other characters where their looks are a bit more streamlined). The girls though. Woah. Ohlala. Very pretty.

              Like

              • I’m okay with his wardrobe except for:
                1/ the slippery snape cape
                2/ the feathery crow cape
                Those two need to burn.
I actually like how sumptuous and volumous his robes are. They signify his status as the crown prince, and he looks like an anime character coming to life 😍

                Like

                  • Do you mean the episode was draggy or the cape in the episode was draggy? Lol I have to ask because I remember his feathery cape draggung on the ground and caught petals on them in ep 30 (glorious glorious ep) but have no idea what happened in 29. 30 was all I can remember after rewinding and rewatching for the nth time

                    Like

                    • Now that you mentioned it, the cape was draggy as well! I have to say, the drama, I do likie. 30 was good!I queued up four episodes, it’ll be six tomorrow. Yippie!!!
