Mei Gongqing Chapter Index

《媚公卿》林家成

Mei Gongqing (The Bewitching Courtier) by Lin Jiacheng

cover

Update: I have received Lin Jia Cheng’s express consent to translate this novel. It is illegal to take my translations without permission or to use it for monetary gains.

This is a ‘rebirth’ story where Chen Rong, the heroine, finds her second chance at life after burning herself to death. Set in the Eastern Jin era when bureaucrats and their lofty yet equally hypocritical and oppressive ideas once ruled the empire, Chen Rong is made to use her past life’s experience to survive and hopefully find happiness this time around.

Yes, it’s over 200 chapters -_- so don’t ask me what I’m thinking. It’s not often I finish something this long let alone finding it lovely. But there you have it. It was such a lovely read from beginning to end. For once, the heroine sticks out like a sore thumb not because she’s an alien from the future, but because there are simply outcasts in any era in time. She can’t help who she is, she tries to conform, but she nevertheless knows herself better than anyone else and admirably stands by her choice. A serious plot that is nevertheless scattered with gaiety, a winsome OTP, and an ending that somehow manages to pull away happy. Check, check, and check.

All aboard!

  2. Just like to say Thank You! for the translation. I just ‘discovered’ this novel while browsing yesterday and read through everything through one night! I slept at 7am! I noticed you started this project in 2015 and appreciate very much that you’re faithfully following through in 2017 despite your schedule. Alas, I can’t wait! Will attempt to read the original Chinese (a real challenge) or listen to the audiobook to find out what happened.

By the way, your translations are great! I think it’s quite difficult to translate Chinese into English because poetically beautiful Chinese descriptions when translated into English may come across as melodramatic. You did a wonderful job of conveying the atmosphere of the novel in English though. Thanks once again!

  3. Thank you so much for your translations, you are amazing! I love this story (I have reread it many times). I hope (as a fan who clings to each and every word of this story) that you would consider translating the skipped chapters at some point? Even the slower chapters add so much to the character development, as a fan, I can’t help but hope to one day read those skipped chapters! Thank you again for your work, as always! =)

    • Thanks for your kind words. Your (and other readers’) love for the story is what keeps me going in this long haul.
With that said, it really is a long haul. At my pace, I have another 2 years to reach the finale. Two years is a long time and there’s no telling what will happen to my availability. So my goal is to get as much story out as possible while also getting to the finish line as soon as possible in order to minimize the chances of the project getting dropped somewhere along the way.
Another reason why I likely won’t go back to the skipped chapters is that, this being the internet, my translation is vulnerable to being stolen and distributed without my consent. There’s not much that I can do about it, so I’m deliberately skipping chapters so that if stolen, what they have will never be a complete version of the book.
Of course, I’ll be mindful of the flow and integrity of the story when I choose what chapters to skip. You can rest assured you’re not missing any juicy details.

      • Many thanks for your amazing translations (they are the BEST)! I especially enjoy your notes, and summarizations of the skipped chapters 😄 It is a shame that novel translations get pirated! I appreciate your dedicated efforts, as there is a lot of work involved (more than just translating…) looking forward to future chapters.

  6. Hi,
I am Valentina Linz, an amateur writer and translator Portuguese speacker. I like the work you translate, Mei Gongqing, and I have an interest in translating it into Portuguese for non-commercial purposes, even with puplicity and donations. but if the author and you want me to translate in book form and try to get in touch with a publisher for the publication, so with the three parties getting paid for the sales, I also make myself available to try (but knowing the publishing market, it’s almost impossible!)
I would like to know if I would have the authorization for this translation coming from you, and also could help me to obtain the authorization with the author, being that I don’t have any knowledge about mandarim.
    Thanks for the attention,
    Valentina Linz

    • Hi, you are welcome to use my translation as long as it is for non-commercial purposes (meaning you don’t get monetary gains) but I do not use Weibo so I cannot contact the original author for you. That was done as a favor to me by a friend.

      • Thank you for answering me and for your approval. This is very important to me, especially as a writer. The Chinese books are being a huge source of inspiration for me, but I can’t share with many because they aren’t known in Brazil. There is no translation of a Chinese novel into Portuguese that has a female protagonist, this will be the first. (and no, I will NOT release this novel as if it were mine …)
But could you send me an email, saying that you approve me to translate this novel, just as a formality? My address is linzvalentina@gmail.com, or you can enter my blog and send in the part of the menu that is written CONTACT.
I want to post on my own blog, or in a non-profit translation group. I don’t think at all of profiting from this translation.

      • Hello, I would like to inform you of something and make a request.
My translation into Portuguese of Mei Gongqing migrated to another site, from a group of translations of manga. We are trying to create a first asian novel translation group in portuguese aimed at a more feminine audience. But the translation is still not for profit, since one of the group’s principles is the voluntary translation. There is no advertisement on the site, nor are there any donation requests.
And then the second request : could we translate Sansheng, Wangchuan Wu Shang? I do not know if you have this information, but a Brazilian translation group translated a chapter of this translation a few years ago, but abandoned it. We would like to give continuity to this translation. We can?
And please, could you not accept this message, so that it doesn’t become public?

        • Yes you can use any of my English translation as a reference for your translation. I don’t have a problem with that. But know that my permission for my English translations is not the same as the original Chinese authors’ rights for their works.

I’ve been too curious how will this pitiful Ah Rong will struggle in an era of having nothing, no skills, family, wealth, only bewitching face. I cry for her fate. (Always visiting to check for some movements). Thanks hamster428

If possible, would you please ask the author about this? It will be just non-profit postings and can be deleted anytime in the future if the author wants it to be removed. Please. Sorry for bothering you again. It’s very difficult to sign up weibo from overseas so I guess I can’t contact the author. If by any chance you can help me with this, then that’ll be wonderful. However, I totally understand if you can’t. Thank you.
