Drama addict’s Thursday babbling

For those who are waiting for MGQ updates, I have 5 pages to go. Pls bear with me.

In the meanwhile, Ohoho did the cast and crew just go on record to say that their author incorrectly used an idiom? Oh yes they did! And I’m having a good time loling

I’m quite impressed with this crew. It seems they are going through the script and improvising on set. In the same vid, they are discussing his outfit’s lack of dragon embroidery (which the female lead originally uses to identify him as royalty) and decided to name drop his palace instead. Yang Mi is quite useless as she excuses herself to go to the bathroom and leave the thinking to Mark rolf.

And then this happens:

110

111112114115116118120

And this is what ended up being used:

117

They are basically talking about the two idioms 色厉内荏 and 恶言厉色, both having the characters 厉 and 色 in them. The one originally used means “sheep in a wolf’s disguise,” or someone who puts on a front even though they are cowardly inside. The one Mark suggests to use means “speaking harsh words and looking mean.”

This scene is when they met again at the Donghai sea palace, and she scolded him for overstepping his boundary thinking she was his dead wife. And so he said, “I’m sorry, I mistook you for her. She wouldn’t be so _____  like you.”

Have no idea which one She Who Shall Not Be Named meant to use, but Mark’s idiom sure fits the situation a ton better.

I’m still enjoying the drama. The climax for me was the Donghai sea palace episodes. The goodies are still sprinkled here and there, but it was so emotionally satisfying to see how happy YH was to have found his supposedly dead wife again. There’s currently a disconnect in their feelings because she, of course, has forgotten him. And in a lot of ways, she isn’t the Susu that he fell in love with, the one that would cry over a stranger’s injuries or the one whose heart breaks every time he leaves. BQ is a lot more fun, but the romance with SS was more endearing.

  1. originally, i didn’t want to watch this as I was anticipating more of General and i than this one. However, it was disappointed and found myself sucked into this one instead. the leads has so much chemistry and I swooned every time there’s a scene between then. I even shipped her and Mo Yuan!!! lol. my climax was that reveal scene too when he found out that she was alive all this time. Mark drew me in the most as his acting is superb, especially his emotional scenes. I always like Yang Mi but I found that out of all her roles, I like her in here the most and her acting is awesome as well. I think it is safe to say that this is the first time I actually prefer the drama to the book…at least so far into the story. I also agree with you that his romance with SS was more endearing. But that’s the great part about it, as there’s always that memory they will both cherish when they finally reconciled.

    • General and I was DISASTER!!! I want to wipe it out from my memory. Same as you I was eagerly waiting for G&I, but I ended up ditching it for good after 10 or so episodes.

      • You sound just like me!!!!!! After 4 episodes I thought it will get better, Cgi, bad filming and the weird color hue but I stop because it was terrible (also after 10 episodes). This is what not to do when adapting the book. I’m so glad 3L3W did a great job so far.

    • Lol I can’t say much about G&I without making peanuts sad. The first two episodes were great so I hung on until the inevitable separation. I was gonna go back to watch once they reunite, but then this drama airs and now that’s history.
Haha yeah they are really working the chemistry. For a melo xianxia, it’s not even cheesy. Dialogues are on point, and characters have great self awareness.

  2. Lol Mark Chao has quite the brains. Yang Mi *cough cough LOL. The crew looks like they’ve been working hard (amidst many laughs from Mark Chao xD) I hope I can find time to watch it since it really does look quite good! At the same time I can’t afford to drop into the deep pit of no return atm so first life, then dramas. Otherwise, I’m fangirling really hard over everything from the sidelines hehe! 😘
Hope life is going well for you on your end hamster!

    • I love watching the funny BTS vids because the crew seems to have a really good time filming, and I like watching how things get done even though it sometimes totally ruins the image haha
Things are going well, thnx. Two weeks ago was horrible because of a deadline but now work is slow again and I’m vacation planning at my desk 😆 Hope your RL will slow down too so you can sneak some drama in

  3. I prefer Mark Chao’s Mo Yuan and Ah Yin than I do Ye Hua and Bai Qian. I even like Yehua and Susu’s chemistry. Lol Idk I just cant warm up to the nerdy/awkward but super cute Yehua with Bai Qian.
That being said… there is a scene I am curious how they are going to play out for the DH and FJ couple since he already knows her and her Identity before YH and BQ’s wedding.
The scene when she comes from swimming and they meet “for the first time” even though he doesnt pay mind to her.
Also isnt she suppose to have already saved him as a fox before they both go to the mortal world? I am very curious.

  4. hamster, I was wondering if you plan to read She Who Shall Not Be Named’s new book about Mo Yuan? And if you do, will you be translating it? I’m really looking forward to Mo Yuan’s book, apparently a few chapters have been out already and his lady love is from the demon tribe !

  5. Hamster, could you enlightened me with the story between DJ and FJ in the drama during their time in mortal world ? I am very confused why DJ died earlier before his time and FJ tried to seduced his son ? Thank you in advance.

    Like

    • FJ’s job was to fulfill DJ’s “love trial”. She seduced his son so that he can be heartbroken, thereby experiencing the pain of love. He died before his time because he had loved her too much and the betrayal was too painful to bear

  6. Forgot Peanuts website for Wallace is recapping General and I. I like Angelababy but her acting is whateves with me lol. Thank goodness Yang Mi’s studio is staying faithful to the book and changing things that doesn’t affect the storyline so much except on DH and FJ (which is understandable). I’m a bit bummed that the studio didn’t get the rights to PB and have Dilraba reprise her role as FJ. Not caught up with this drama though.
That idiom correction. lol. I don’t remember if the author was the scriptwriter for her other works, namely Hua Yu Xin? That Hua Yu Xin drama was awful 😅
Yang Mi would be me LOL

    • HXY should be burned from everyone’s memory. Poof.
I had never seen AB in anything before. I don’t watch too much c-ent stuff. I’m okay with her portrayal in Fragrance but I thought Bai Pingting is super ordinary looking, why did they choose a gorgeous girl to play her 😕 typically I’m not one to disapprove based on looks, but it really undermines her brains being her biggest attraction.
They leaked a bunch of Ye Hua episodes today! You should catch up!

    • They’re twins, but YH was stillborn or something like that so his father nourished his soul in his head (ala zeus and athena) and passed him on to MY. Then he went to the 1st Prince’s wife to be born in physical form.

      • In the novel, didn’t Ye Hua’s soul spend thousands of years gathering the shattered pieces of Mo Yuan’s soul until he had to leave to be born into the Prince of Heaven? I don’t recall that part being shown in the drama.

Also, how did Bai Qian regain her memories of her time as Su Su in the novel? I don’t remember that at all, except that she was quite furious with Ye Hua after she had regained her Su Su memories and ignored him.

What happened to Li Jing at the conclusion of the novel? In the drama, he seems to have a very superfluous role. If his character were written out of the drama, the storyline wouldn’t have been affected much. His wife Xuan Nu seems to have more of an effect on the plot.

        • I don’t remember for sure about YH trying to gather MY’s soul. He was just a spirit with no corporeal form so I dunno how that would work.
BQ regained her memory when the Jiepo Deng was smashed.
And LJ & XN pretty much exited after BQ took back her face at Daziming Gong. They wrote in a lot more tidbits for the drama. LJ was superfluous to begin with. He was just the ex boyfriend every girl goes through before finding The One lol

  7. Thank you Hamster for translating this BTS!! I got so obsessed with this drama, that I have watched every episode 3x….. raw on YT, Bilutv for vietsubs (I can read Vietnamese, but have to pause like every scene bc i couldn’t read fast enough lol), and then again on Dramafever for Engsubs. I saw a video with the director mentioning that Mark got all A’s and scholarship in school when he was in Canada. I love funny and brainy guys! All those BTS of Mark dancing, posing, and making faces had me LMAO.
I am so glad this adaptation delivers. I hate the adaptation of General and I( people around me rave about it and have me questioning if I watched a different drama), so I tried to keep my expectation low for this one. But, Mark blew me away! Whenever he smiles, I’m in awe. Whenever he cries, I whimper. The scene, after FJ returned the lamp and his uncle told him to let go of SS, and YH just freaking bawled; my heart was breaking into pieces. He cries so well.
I can’t believe people said YH deserves it! Sure, he could have communicated with SS better and reassure her a bit more. but whenever they’re alone, he definitely shows how much he cares and loves her. He also mentioned that he knew SS didn’t push SJ, that he never doubt her. He endured so much bc of her. I understand why SS was insecure and wanted to leave him after all the heaven palace bs, bc she didn’t know YH’s intentions. But how can viewers not understand YH’s love for SS? T.T

    • Lol I’m sure the whole world is in love with Mark/YH now. He sure was a discovery! I do a similar routine as you. I watch and rewatch and scroll through comment threads for fellow spazzers haha.
That ep 28 was such a great episode to showcase YH’s love and desperation. He was barely hanging onto the hope that she will come back even as a fake, and when that too got taken away, you can see his existence come crashing down. Ugh his devastation was so painful to watch and yet I couldn’t take my eyes away from him.
I think he could’ve explained to her in clearer terms, ie not just “stay away from other people” but “stay away from other people, these peeps are CRAY!” But at the same time SS is really dense. I would’ve picked up on the situation with just what he said. Like c’mon, you’re setting yourself up for angst little lady.
I love watching bts! So funny. Yang Mi and her random Cantonese with the director cracks me up. It’s like she’s practicing for when she comes back home to hubby.

  9. Hamster, could you explained what happened between FJ and DJ from ep 49 to 54 ? I have read Pillow Book but I knew they adapt differently for this drama because the studio didn’t get the rights to use PB material. I really lost in translation when watching raw episode. I love the PB’s couple so that’s why I keep asking you about them. Sorry if it’s too much trouble.

    • So, I’m at work and haven’t watched 53-54 yet. But I know in the previous episodes DJ tells FJ that they are not meant to be because his name is not on the Three Lives Stone, so he’s essentially not meant for anyone. She cuts one if her tails to create a dagger from it, and uses it to try to carve his name onto the stone, which of course doesn’t work. And then she fainted from her tail injury. And then he came to visit her, and I think this next part is from the trailer for my unwatched episode but she calls him “Your majesty, I’m really happy you piggybacked me back, but you got all wet. let’s wait til the rain stops next time.” and he calls her “Jiu Er” thinking she was hallucinating about their times on earth. But then she says “I was lying. I know you’re DHDJ.” And yeah, that’s all I know for now.

53/54 don’t dive into it much, (won’t spoil it for you but they literally get <5 minutes screentime) Saw the BTS of them (watch them, they will comfort the sad scenes, because the actors are much more livelier haha) and DH's actor shed a tear, but they cut it from the official ep (disappointed it was a moving scene) I really don't want a BE for this couple, but ack 😦

      • Thank you so much. At least now, I can understand up to ep 52 what happenned between them. Lots of love for you Hamster for your explanation.

        • No problem. And like aw said, there’s not a lot of DH FJ in the next two eps. Toward the end of 54, FJ got riled up by Sujin who said BQ wronged her by taking away her eyes even though it’s the other way around. So DJ stepped in to be the “judge”. He basically gave FJ a look that said “stand aside and watch me work, baby” hahaha. And when Tianjun insinuated that there’s something btw FJ and DJ (so DJ couldn’t possibly be fair), DJ shut him up saying “haven’t I been clear enough? Need I say more?” And Tianjun had to shut his mouth haha
