Let’s talk about… the drama that shan’t be named

Let’s set aside the real life drama so I can spazz for a moment, because despite all, I had always loved this story and the drama is miraculously everything I wanted from an adaptation. I was starting to wonder if Gu Man is the only writer who gets faithful adaptations before this one came along. They kept most of the source material (for whatever that’s worth) and added even more goodies that I’m left flailing every time.

13 episodes in and I finally get my OTP fix~~

The drama is told chronologically so we’re now at the mortal portion told in YH’s bonus story. And it’s even cuter than in the book. This is where BQ (as SS) saves the dwarf dragon form of YH and sleeps with it at night to keep it warm. And YH hilariously loves it despite his fussy protests.

016

The drama script also adds this part, and I love all the extra dialogues because they’re pretty funny.

010

011

012

So of course the dragon flies back to Heaven and seeks dating advice from his third uncle.

013

015

014

And he shows up at her house all bloodied up so that she would feel sorry for him. But upon seeing how much she is crying over his injuries, he heals himself and proceeds to put on the greatest act of all time.

001002

OTP gazes you guys. Kill me now.003

And then he writes his name on her hand so she would know how the characters are written. I just about die from all the dripping honey in this episode.

004005006007008

And can we talk about how insanely adorable FJ is? Who can say no to this face? Well, DH for now. But he’ll grovel soon muahahaha.

017

018019020021022023024025027

Her bff SM is LOVE too! I’m a little sad that he seems close to Dijun but Liansong so far isn’t?

031

032I surprisingly even like LJ. Zhang Binbin makes him way more sympathetic than I would’ve thought of him in the book.

029

And his sister Princess Yanzhi who was just a super minor character mentioned a few times got to be so bad ass in the drama. Yay for bad ass women. But she has the saddest eyes and I have a bad feeling she won’t get a happy ending (trailer, I hope you’re misleading).030

I think by this time every one who’s who has made their appearances (except for the little dough who isn’t born yet). They morphed Zhihe and YH’s distant cousin Zhiyue into one character. She’s exactly the spoiled brat I imagined her to be. Poor FJ will have a lot to put up with.

As far as performances, I adore this entire cast. Yang Mi does well when she’s mischievous and innocent/daft, less so in emotional scenes if I want to be picky. I’ve heard complaints that she isn’t “ethereal” enough to be a goddess. I dunno, but I never read BQ to be ethereal and unworldly. She’s beautiful, but she is the type to humble brag, judge other people, and hang onto revenge. Not repulsively so, but enough so. Yang Mi’s casting as BQ is more suitable IMO than Liu Yifei. Her drama-other-half Mark Chao is basically my hero, even with the Snape cape. He’s restrained and subtle, and my kind of handsome 😀 The two have great chemistry that makes me look forward to more.

Dilraba is zomg the cutest thing in all the lands. She gets a pass to everything as far as I’m concerned. Vengo is already displaying 变态 biantai tendency which is exactly what you want from the old emperor. These two also have good chemistry. Can’t wait for the lofty emperor to fall for a baby fox.

The only weak links in the cast are BQ’s 4th ge and the 2nd Heavenly Prince. Alan’s just not at the same caliber as the rest. He feels like a young and awkward child amongst adults. As for the 2nd prince, he may be the handsomer but the 3rd prince LS is by far the better actor. Which is just as well, since banishment to the North Sea is tantamount to shortened screen time in a character’s fate anyhow.

Will continue to watch with caution (because the drama gods are capricious) but so far so good.

  1. I totally agree with you!! Although I feel that Yang Ming looks a bit older than Mark Chao but then BQ is 90,000 years older than YH!! I’m loving this drama!!❤❤

  2. I watched this without the sub (kinda iffy on the political stuff but who cares for those stuff 😛 ) and play the videos when I’m working lol. I think most people refer the movie version folks but I seeing the two of them now, I found YM and MC both okay. FJ or rather Dilreba is too adorable. I never imagined BQ as so beautiful or ethereal. She definitely does give off an older sister appeal and somewhat motherly vibe sometimes (maybe it’s just me) so YM actually works lol. I really like the settings and the clothes aren’t too eye-catchy. Vengo as DH… he’s tolerable… I got scarred from his character on The Interpreter so I’m a bit cautious on him.
Let’s just spazz for now 😀

    • BQ is described as the most beautiful in all the realms so she’s definitely supposed to be a gorgeous woman. But her actions and manners never translate into ethereal for me. So the fandom obsession with LYF’s casting is perplexing. YY is my flower boy, but his looks lack the gravita of YH and his limited range really showed in Weiwei.
Ooh I haven’t watched the Interpreter. What did he do? I like what I’ve seen of him so far here.

      • Vengo’s character was the desperate second male lead that was domineering and persistent :\ But Vengo as DH seems fine. Oh I forgot BQ was described as most beautiful. I always thought FJ was more known for that (her many suitors).

        • Eek that sounds unpleasant… but we are often unfair to the ones we don’t love. Coz persistence can be a good trait coming from the one we like haha.
FJ is also pretty, but not the prettiest that DH claims to have seen in his overly long life lol

          • Just got annoyed that the female lead in The Interpreter ( yang mi) said no multiple times but Vengo’s character kept showing up. And then he went all weird by the second half of the show although it’s understandable since the show went all dog blood on me LOL. I view Feng Jiu through the eyes of DH then xD YY is the epitome of pretty flowers. Ye Hua is a vanilla dude and serious to a lot of people (except his buddies and BQ) so I’m like whatever on YY’s casting lol. I prefer fouth ge for YY LOL. Siming is cute ^.^

            • YY as 4th ge would be perf! But fans will cry umbrage haha
Yeahhhh isn’t SM cute? He’s actually very mature and grounded, and just all around a smart, measured man per whoever is portraying him. He didn’t have half this personality in the book.
Oh wow no thnx to dog blood… that’s another level of exhaustion.

SM is adorable, can’t find much information about the actor. Wang Xiao?
Lian Song was DH’s friend right? And then he brought Cheng Yu to the heaven realm… that’s as far as my memory serve me :\
Thinking back to The Interpreters it’s funny that my friend and I was watching it but then stopped spazzing to each other when the second half rolled around lol. We “forgot” about that drama 😛

Man there had been so many dramas with second halves that burned me. Sometimes I wonder what the producers are thinking.

                  • Thanks for the clarification. I think the positive side to dramas with terrible second halves is that we can drop them before they get worse. Dramas with terrible endings are the ones I try to avoid 😛 all those hours spent watching the drama and found out that the ending was vague or someone die off near the end.

I heard PB will be adapted by a different team. But hopefully they get through a lot of the prequel parts her so we get our DH FJ fix now.

Look up the account Croton Megahit then the official channel will have subs but just late. There is also The Princess Weiyang, Just One Smile Is Very Alluring, Genera an I and Les Interpretes

  4. I was wondering if you would comment on this adaptation. I’m glad your satisfied so far. I like YM as a boy – she looked like the chubby junior high boys I went to school with. Like she needed about 20lbs of muscle and a foot of height before the girls would look at him. You’ll have to fill us in on how the official subtitles keep up with the actual dialogue.

    • Haha she does look like an adolescent boy with baby fat. Hmm I might sometimes see screenshots on tumblr but I don’t watch cdramas with Eng subs so I don’t think I’ll be able to comment. If it’s dramafever, they’ll aim for localization… which is my preference but I know some don’t like that.

BTW, I just realized that this drama is that drama that is based don a novel that has been accused of plagiarism, well I already read the novel I guess I just need to finish it all through the drama XD

          • Now that you’re mentioning them, Nirvana in Fire is my favorite chinese historical drama of all time, with Heartless (maybe? pingying is WuXinFaShi) as a second.

Journey of the Flower, I disliked a lot because of my lack of affection for the main leads. I just didn’t like HuaQianGu that much, she was okay at some parts and the actress was fine but she annoyed me greatly at points. BaiZiHua I disliked even more, probably because I couldn’t get into his character at all.

Chinese Paladin 5 I watched most of the way through but was generally mediocre to me.

Have you ever watched WuXinFaShi? It’s only ten episodes long but it seems to have a season two now. I didn’t watch the second season though, since the first ended satisfyingly for me. I cried, but I was satisfied.

  8. Hello hello Captain Hamster,
    **Hugzz** I missed you

My first post in 18months and trust you lure me out of hiding!!

OMG let’s talk/squeal/fangirl over your Voldermort of C-drama hehe – so glad to have something to fill the void since Legend of the Blue Sea and Goblin wrapped up!

if you thought that was dripping with goofy gooey honey moments, just wait til you gobble through eps 14 and 15… credit to Mark for selling YH, oh my golly gosh I adore his puppy love!!!!! Is it just me or does anyone else think that Mark has an uncanny resemblance to Yang MI’s real life hubby Harwick Lau, maybe a tad rounder in the face?? Oh man he smolders…. Smexy…. !!!!!!!

This order of story telling leaves little room for a “shocking revelation” at the end but at least it sets us up to root for the OTP, I am invested enough in them to want their happy ending.

Gosh I love the extra dialogues too eg/
She lets her poor injured guest “insert thick-skinned YH” to sleep on the only bed in her hut while she spends her nights slumped over the table near by, he enthusiastically jumps out on cue each night when she is deep asleep to carry her to bed to snuggle.
    – On the one occasion she stirs awake and asks in confusion
“Why am I asleep on the bed?”
Our poor YH plays up the victim to say in all seriousness
“Late at night, when you are so groggy with sleep you just creep into bed and of course I am SOOO badly injured I have no way of fending you off”… (All the while he is still tightly clutching the fair maiden to his chest)
Miss Daft continues with “and I forced myself onto you for cuddles too?”
To receive a poker faced “Yes, but don’t move”, -you know incase you bump his injuries lol

    How about this gold nugget:
BQ: “you don’t have to repay me, when I saved you I never thought to do it for a repayment, I want for nothing”
YH: “whether you want to receive it or not is your problem, I am indebted to you so I must repay you. Take your time to think, isn’t there anything you want?”
BQ: “um if you really have to repayment me… you can repay with your body”… *facepalms*

Lol I have fallen off my chair by this point! 🤣🤣🤣How YH is refraining from star jumping and cartwheeling at the runaway success of his scheming is beyond me lol

Love third uncle and his dating advice hehe “crowned prince of the heavens, handsome as he is but refuses to play that card, refuses to play the hero saves the maiden in destress role too and opts for the lose-to-win scheme to have her save him instead… haizzzzz” ❤❤

    • Hello!! Glad to see you coming out of hiding.

Hmm I think it’s the mouth and chin area, although Hawick looks more shrewd.

Lolol and how about “If you want, I can make every day a wedding day~~” I love the juxtaposition of how he can’t even bother to answer Sujin but he’s forever quipping w Susu. The order as told does make us root for the OTP as you said, and also the male lead for the things to come… which I heard is ep 19 😭 at this point they’ve made it clear that if she’s discovered by his grandpapa then it’s welcome to Hell. The way it was told as past reflections in the book really takes away the gravity of the situation and why he had to do what he did.

How do you like baby Jiu and old man DH? They’re already getting along pretty well haha. Not so sad like in the book.

It seems they are merging two books into one drama which is very ambitious! although I hope they skip out on Aranya’s dream and have another drama focusing on DH and BFJ because lord thats going to be one long drama. BTW I was wondering how they were going to play out the homosexuality in this drama but they evaded it LOL I guess thats why 4th bro doesnt have a lot of presence.

She’s not getting any mistreatment in his palace, and he is already showing her a lot of attention, which I guess I can’t complain about haha

  10. I’m really liking this drama, surprisingly more than the book (I gave up the book halfway because I wanted the drama to surprise me). Thought the chronological order of the drama made more sense in putting us constantly in the “present” time rather than just going through Bai Qian’s flashbacks. I’m living for this OTP. Two words: Mark Zhao. He’s just so adorable as Ye Hua and I love how decisive he is in choosing his love over his lofty position. When he said that the heavenly realm will still have more crown princes in the future, but Su Su only has him (I paraphrased), I was totally won over. Him going from being flustered over the close proximity to being utterly shameless in trying to snake (har) his way into Su Su’s heart is just too much for my heart. So cute. (Of course, Yang Mi is also doing very well! I feel the same way you do about her emotional scenes, but I’ll take what I can).

I keep waiting for the other shoe to drop. Like, the angst is coming, I know it. I get the feeling that Ye Hua of the book and Mark Zhao’s interpretation of Ye Hua is a little different so I’m wondering how things will unfold in the drama. I can’t imagine for a moment Ye Hua would believe that Su Su would push Su Jin(?) into that cliff of doom (don’t remember what it’s called). I mean, the same Su Su who was so kind and accepting of him? I’m sure there are reasons why he does what he did, which he can’t disclose because reasons/angst. I’m both excited and fearful to get there. But I want to get there. I’m spoiled because two episodes a day is not enough for me.

Sorry for the essay but I have so much feels/thoughts about this drama that I don’t know where to share. Hua Qian Gu was my last xianxia book/drama crack, and I really have a soft spot of the genre. Do you perhaps any recommendations of the genre that I can check out? I need something to fill in the gaps between episodes, lol.

    • Hi~ I like long essays haha. Feel free to spazz with me. Mark’s portrayal of YH is actually very much like the book version. Icy and reticent as the crown prince but is sweet and devoted to his family (by this I’m also including the little son that he ends up raising as a single father). He can be quite cheeky in the book as well, but the drama has amplified the cheekiness haha. I’m quite happy with the live action as far as YH is concerned. The reason of his betrayal of Susu was kept as some sort of big secret in the book for angst purposes but it’s quite simple and has already been made plainly obvious in the drama so far, ie him trying to salvage the situation from exploding under his grandfather’s wrath. Like, there has never been any moment that YH betrays BQ, ever. I was a huge fangirl of his and kept having to defend him for that incident which readers don’t get. He’s the one who gets mistreated throughout the story my poor C.P. 😅
I don’t know any other drama but for books you can check out Heavy Sweetness Ashlike Frost http://onesecondspring.blogspot.hk/p/translations.html

Yes Mark is amazing a YH.. everytime he and SS have their intimate moments phoarrrrr – leaves me feeling like a peeping tom lol
never like YH as much in the book, you send so much of the book going you either are a massive douche or some poor back story that is yet to be told with regards to his choice of her name, to whether he likes SuJin, to why he didn’t defend SS when she was accused of the eye injury crime etc…but because it’s not disclosed until so late in the story (when his moms yells at her for being heartless in the face of all he went through for her and later in YH’s epilogue) that my care factor was not there anymore. In the series you can see how he only ever had eyes for her and how his hands were tied/forced along the way.

Was I the only person screaming “NOOOOoooooOOo he told you not to!!! “to the screen when SS runs out of the hut & out of the protective shield because YH took the hit?! Thank god the release rate is robust (2 ep a day and 1 on Saturday) I am seriously hooked! Need my need drama crack fix!!!!

Sadly, they aren’t many BTS videos for DH and FJ 😔

I think this drama might follow the Pillow books novel, not closely, but at least they included all occasions based on the books so far. One thing that makes me happy is this drama ‘allows’ FJ to tell DH that she likes him. When I read the books, I felt sorry for FJ because of her one sided love and for DH not knowing that she has loved him for more than two thousands years. Ah and I can see the pet fox! I wonder whether they will include Jiheng or not.

        Like

        • Yeah, it seems that the progression of their loveline is a lot smoother here. I’m sure obstacles of their own will be be thrown in their way but I’m so glad she isn’t pining after him as arduously as in the book. She’s supposed to give him the cold shoulder in the mortal realm so that he can experience heartbreak. Here they are just lovely dovey and Im not complaining haha
Oh lord Jiheng. If she appears I think she might have a dif name. Yang Mi’s comp didn’t buy rights to PB so they can’t use details from there. I think that’s why Zhihe got changed to Zhiyue because Zhihe as a character only appeared in PB. Anything outside of the 1st book will have to be reinvented I think.

          Like

          • Hmm, I thought Yang Mi bought the rights:(. But to be honest, if anyone decides to bring Pillow books into a drama, it would be hard as they will need to compete with the current casts. I want more FJ and DH’s screen times! Even that demon people have more screen times than them!

            Like

            • No YM’s comp only bought rights for this one, not PB. For a while there, Jiro Wang’s name was floated around as DH… which, umm okay whatever you think producer.
I’m sure FJ and DH will get more screentime. What the whole world is concerned with right now is for SS to jump off that terrace ASAP 🤣 so the YH and BQ storyline is in more of an urgency to get moving

I am not a fan of BQ and YH, so I couldn’t careless about them. Sorry not too sorry hahaha.

  12. Glad you love it too!! It’s getting to much more depressing parts (BQ as Susu and being taken to heaven and being mistreated and locked up) =___= There was a scene (I hope this doesn’t count as spoiler because it was just in the recent eps) FJ went to Susu’s “dungeon” and demanded to see her (but of course couldn’t LOL) and they are literally a DOOR apart from each other and as audience one just wants to scream like “THAT IS BQ you auntie!!!!! Your the only one who knows what she “looks like!!!” xD….but of course they never meet….
FJ + DH is favourite parts in the story so far (+ rereading your excellent translation makes it so much better) so sad, Bai Gungun won’t appear….. he and Little Dough would be the best of friends lol……..I can’t even find a picture of kid that can cast him xD (that white hair of his…)

I will soldier on but that’s after refilling aplenty on the lovey dovey feels to last through the upcoming angst, buts that’s because I wanna see the baddies get their due… 😈😈

Seriously though I thought gods and deities are meant to be benevolent beings that are free from the love, lust, greed & desires that doom mortals, so why does it seem like all the gods in this story are driven by self interest, greedy or lustful beings no better than humans and in the case of the heavenly emperor – just a down right unlikable tyrant!!! 😡

I think personally I am just a little burnt out seeing so many plagiarist getting continually rich off of other people’s hard work and not even showing signs of remorse or change (not so much T7, but so many others out there), or throw out extremely insincere comments even after lawsuits prove otherwise. Writing is hard work and I just think it’s very sad that people are almost conditioned to not care and quality and only care about money/bankablility. Eh, I gotta stop ranting…

Anyhow, I still love this series a lot so I will definitely watch soon. Just have to prepare myself. Still, thank you hamster for your review. I always look forward to your posts. 🙂

  16. OMG I finished reading your translation for this before the ‘issue’ and was so excited to see it come to life in the screens. It’s so far exceeding my expectation! It’s got quite a lot of stuff from the books and added stuff that felt appropriate and makes the characters more 3D haha. I was a bit taken aback when they began with Mo Yuan arc but the chronological order works well for the drama. I honestly think Yang Mi and Mark are nailing it well! Even if Liu Yi Fei is considered more godess-like, Yang Mi possess charms that felt more like Bai Xian, and we know Bai Xian don’t let people mess around with her. Mark Chao was the one I never really watched but him acting out Ye Hua really brought the character to life. In the book, Ye Hua’s point of view was few in betweens so I couldn’t really fully understand him or imagine him much. Can’t wait til Bai Xian becomes a goddess again and the three of them living together 😀 😀

    • Yep I agree! I like the bits that they added because they feel organic to the characters and the story. LYF has a very static Mary Sue face. But YM can get her bitchy face on which is necessary for playing BQ lol
I haven’t seen mark in anything either but I’m smitten here. He doesn’t do much, but whatever he’s doing it’s very effective. They shouldn’t let his hair down though. I keep thinking of a ghost 😌
I think tmrrw ep she will lose her eyes, and then possibly by Saturday she will jump, so crossing my fingers Sunday will be the end to all this misery.

  17. Ive read the book last year and I was abit disappointed when the drama poster came out HAHAHA. I think YM suits the role of BQ but I feel Mark dont fit YH. But when I start watching the drama, wow it surprise me. I think although Mark dont resembles what i imagined YH to be, I would say he really did a good job. During work, hes all serious and when hes with BQ, can feel his love bubbling out. All the cute scenes with YM in the human world is so gooddddd!!! Even the CG dragon HAHAHAHHA where she kisses it and he was like “how dare you!”. His acting was on point. I look forward to see him chase back BQ.

Vengo as DH also feels kind of weird at first. FJ’s interaction with DH is damn cute! By right 10miles peach blossom and pillow book is on different timeline, to include FJ and DH, they keep the beginning and change part of their story. (it will be too long to include the entire FJ DH story and will lose focus on BQ YH) FJ did became DH’s servant but she didnt get noticed at all etc. Instead, in the drama, they added many cute interactions between them while she is a servant in his house! DH just couldnt leave FJ alone hahahaha. Is there going to be a separate drama of pillow book by a separate team? Has they cast anyone yet?

Im also looking forward to YY as YH in the movie!!! The posters and trailer were really nice!! YY being all loveydovey and handsome. I am also afraid that LYF will look too jie di lian for YY or will the movie be too short to show the full story. The drama did spread over quite a few eps for a short part in the novel – but its okay i like! 😀

    • LYF has a baby face so I don’t think she would look too much like YY’s jiejie lol
PB was bought by another team and they’ve floated names for years but there’s no confirmation yet. We’ll just have to wait and see.
Yeah I think if they’re going to fit PB and any kind of ending for that couple then they’ll have to change the story anyway, rights or not. I kinda don’t mind because PB is really exhausting to read. If they can simplify it in the drama I will be happy lol
Yas YH the dragon is awesome. Love that even with indignance and disdain in his voice every time he talks to her, he spoke to her way more than he spoke to anyone on Heaven. I cant handle the cute!

      • I think PB was ok since i got nothing better to do that time when i was reading xD. I like the part in the dream mirrored world of the past with FJ as 阿兰若. The plot twist of 阿兰若 with DH’s clone is pretty interesting. Im jus not satisfied with the near ending where DH had to sacrifice and leaves her. Kindda similar to 10MPB when YH sacrifices to seal the big bell. Hais, but i do understand its imminent and a problem that stated right from the start. It was going to happen anyway.
Yeah i like the drama version! Its like something new if you have read the novel. I think they twisted the FJ DH story well! Hundreds years of no fate between them is just so saddening to see in the novel. Now FJ just show her affections for him directly while DH cant reject her cuteness and is opening up to her. ❤ liansong teasing him that qingqiu princesses are not that easy to handle is also damn cute. I think liansong and siming portrayed their character well! So supportive and gives comedy 😀

        • Yeah that plot twist at the end of PB was really lame. I wish it hadn’t happened.

Seems FJ bit SJ in the drama haha. Are they combining the part where she scratches Jiheng? But there’s no way she can be mistreated here since she can freely turn back to herself and DH, SM, and CY also already got her back.
Love the supporting cast. 4th ge today was adorable too for lecturing his future bro in law lol

          • HAHAHA YA, totally like how SM and CY is surrounding her, keep giving her advice to chase DH or just as simply as gossiping together. Who would dare to touch her sia if she turns back to her human form. Even the King dont dare to offend QingQiu. I think the king portrayed in the drama is so weak~ He always had to rely on someone.
I cant help but giggling everytime I see 4th ge and ZheYan together. Even though the drama dont mention it, we all know whats between them ^^
Yu Meng Long as 4th ge is shoooo handsome tooooz. I hope he got more scenes to appear in.

  18. I have to admit I was not a fan of Ye Hua when I read the story translation because the chapter from Ye Hua’s perspective came too late in the book. I am so glad that the drama decided to show us his feelings for Su Su/Bai Qian so plainly. In the novel, I was already so ticked off at him that, by the time the epilogue arrived, I had no sympathy left for him.

I stopped watching after Su Su and Ye Hua married in the mortal realm, because I can’t stomach what is to come without knowing I can speed watch through it all and get to the part where Bai Qian goes back to her goddess self. So far, I am not sure what Li Jing’s role is, except to play the mopey ex-boyfriend who will live in regret for having betrayed Si Yin. In the novel, hamster skimmed over so much of Li Jing’s part that I never really got to know his character. However, Zhang Bin Bin looks really handsome with his constant woebegone expression. 😀

Feng Jiu and Dong Hua are really cute. However, I am sad that Yang Mi didn’t buy the rights to Pillow Book, which means that this drama might not touch the Aranya story arc. When reading hamster’s translation of Pillow Book, I was initially upset about the sudden digression into Aranya’s world. However, little by little, Aranya and Chen Ye’s love story won me over. Their love story became the highlight of Pillow Book for me, and their tragic romance made Dong Hua and Feng Jiu’s relationship juvenile and inconsequential. That scene in Aranya’s world in which the author described how Aranya’s soul had faded away, leaving no trace of her existence, and Chen Ye’s overwhelming emptiness knowing that she will never come back was one of the most heartbreaking, poignant scenes I have ever felt. (Another scene that could rival this scene was the ending in Heavy Sweetness Ash-like Frost, but I won’t spoil anything here for people who wish to read Heavy Sweetness.) Whenever I reflect back on Chen Ye and Aranya’s story, I always visualize them as heartbreakingly beautiful together, but so lost without the other. Two one-winged biyiniaos – United, they soar the heavens together, their hearts so in love that their souls merge into one. Separated, they crash, never able to feel whole again.

  19. I am IN LOVE with this drama, and the cast!! Before the drama came out, everyone was talking about the movie version and how they prefer that cast more (cause Liu Yi Fei and Yang Yang -basically China’s two biggest wet dreams) but hah everyone (including me) are now eating their words.

Mark Chao as Ye Hua keeps impressing me, and like you, he’s basically my hero XD He doesn’t overact which a lot of male leads in Chinese dramas can be guilty of, and he’s got that brooding, dark cloud hanging over him down to a tee. Then his moments with his leading lady turn me into jelly, those OTP moments.

Yang Mi portrays the different lifetimes and their characters so well, like she can transition between being innocent, naive, tomboyish and sassy etc.

And who would’ve thought Zhang Bin Bin can actually make Li Jing that likeable? Again, that’s another casting I’m very happy with.

I am liking the drama a lot more than the book already. It brings all the characters and events to life, and making it even more likable. Which almost never happens.

I agree YM does her various identities sufficient justice. She is playful as Ah Yin, naive as Susu, and jaded as BQ. I’m easy to please haha
And so far all the scenes I look forward to are there! When was the last time that happened in a live action?! This is the one time that 2 eps per day are too little to feed my addiction

Hamster428- I feel like a 13 year old high school all over again when I say this, but episode 30 from start to finish is one of the most emotionally and mentally satisfying episodes I’ve ever seen, like ever (oh god I’m even starting to talk like one) while the butterflies in my stomach haven’t calmed down since. No skinship or even a single kiss, but them FEEELS, ‘ya know? From Snape-ish vibes for the last 300 years or so, to a rejoicing lovesick puppy who found his long lost love-bone and probably feeling like a million fireworks going off at once inside yet gotta remain that dignified Crown Prince composure…. I just can’t. I swear that last analogy wasn’t me tryna be slick with ’em innuendos, but I’m just gonna throw it in there anyway because what the hell, spazzcentral.

I’m so glad she’s back to being Bai Qian. However I will say this: don’t know if the drama is trying to portray her a little differently, or just me but the drama tryna tone down her sassy-ness (in exchange for shyness?!) in the presence of almighty Crown Prince whom she unconsciously harbors indecent thoughts towards? I sure hope they don’t make her demeanor “Su Su-like” in his presence, just to be like the “woman he fell in love with”. But at least he has his eyes set on her the moment he saw those “confirming signs” and I don’t think it would’ve mattered to him if she’s not very Su Su-like anyway.I sure hope it’s a momentary mixture of being flustered and flattered since it’s the most attention she’s gotten in over 70,000 years lol, plus the awkwardness of not letting Dumping down thus not knowing what to do.

Anyway, to start off my Valentine’s day with episodes as gratifying as these two, makes me happy as a clam 🙂 Speaking of which, HAPPY VALENTINE’S HAMSTER428 !!

I nearly died laughing when he and Ah Li would take turn to answer each other’s questions and leave her no chance to say anything. And she’s now even roped into referring to herself as Ah Li’s mother when she talks to the kid. I don’t even care about anyone else. The whole cast can disappear and I wouldn’t know because their family of 3 is lit all I see.

She was definitely flustered, and will continue to be flustered lol. She goes from gobsmacked to embarrassed to aggrieved to chagrin and back to the start haha. That whole East Sea sequence was kept exactly as I remember it. She dishes out some snide remarks but she can never win against YH’s thick skin 😀

  20. I have to admit that I struggled with whether to watch this drama because of the plagiarism issue. Would watching it be a tacit condoning? I am also curious as to how Yang Mi’s studio and director responded to this issue. I hope I am not bringing up painful memories, hamster 428, that is definitely not my intention. Instead, I admire your courage in pointing out all the similarities between the 2 works and taking down your translations. For people like me who are ethnically Chinese can understand but cannot read, your posts bridge the gap between the two worlds. I have seen your link put up in other english drama blogs whenever this issue is referred to so its a very important resource.

This is my first time commenting on a drama blog but wanted to do it as a show of support and interested in hearing yours (and other people’s thoughts) on this. Also glad that you are enjoying the show.

I did end up watching the drama despite my misgivings. Enjoyed the student-teacher part but could not watch the part where SuSu is abused and tortured (I couldn’t watch the counterpart scenes of torture and punishment in the later part Hua Qian Gu either). The whole SuSu arc is uncomfortable to me because of how much in the dark she was (literally and figuratively), how little this man who supposedly loved her was there for her in her darkest hour. Even that earlier ‘cute’ scene of him descending from heaven to watch her sleep in the hut at night was creepy, not sweet. It reminded this incident in the university in the girls’ dorm when I was staying there. Some guy would get into the girls’ bedrooms and watch them sleep. Imagine how horrified they were when they woke up. The police were called.

Many people seem to waiting in relish for the comeuppance that the evil-doers will get when Bai Qian realises what happened. There is a sense that these wronged women usually do not exact enough revenge (see HQG and Princess Wei Young). Thoughts?

    • TBH I don’t even know if YM’s studio knows, or if they care. It’s strictly business for them.

As for me, it’s not my choice to make whether other people read it or not, but it’s within my rights to withhold my own translations, which I’m doing because I don’t want to directly spread what I believe to be a plagiarized work.

Watching the drama is sort of a conflicting thing. I do think it’s sad that she’s getting all these credits and making all these money for ideas she had stolen from someone else. Yet at the same time the drama involves more than just her. All these cast and crew and director, and for all they know, they had bought rights and given credits, and are even giving due respect to the “original” source by sticking so close to it. They are practically doing everything right if only the story they bought weren’t plagiarized to begin with. In that sense, I don’t want to spite the drama just to spite the author. I hadn’t picked up the book since, and really don’t want to read her written words. But the live action allows me to enjoy the story that I once enjoyed purely for its own sake, without thinking it was written by this person or that person.

As for your other comments… ahaha I also woke up once in my dormitory to find a wasted half-naked guy at my door. There was a heat wave that week, I was on the top floor so it was super hot, and I was in an all-girl dormitory so I left the door ajar to help with the heat. It was def not cute. With that said, I think there’s a lot of leeway fictions can have compared to real life, especially in a fantastical setting, and I don’t take it all too seriously. I also think he had tried to be there for her as best he could. The guy was getting struck by lightning every other day so we should give him a break.

I don’t know how everyone else thinks, but I like justice for balance’s sake. If someone does wrong then they should suffer the consequences. Whether the victim exacts revenge or not isn’t important to me. What’s important is that the perpetrator receives just punishment.

      • Thanks for your thoughtful reply. The concept of copyright law and intellectual property rights seems to be rather … fluid in China.

For Ye Hua and his plans/intentions, I have to defer to you since I neither read the book nor watched the scenes except the aftermath of her bandaged eyes and her shrinking with fear away from him. To me, she behaved like an abused woman. The jumping into the hole thingy seems like a suicide, since neither her nor Ye Hua knew she would come back as Bai Qian. As far as they knew, her soul/spirit would be gone forever.

I take your point that this is a fantasy setting and therefore don’t think too much about it. This is not the first nor the last drama (fantasy or not) where the female lead suffers physical plus emotional harm by the male lead or the female competitors or his draconian family. In fact, its so common that its the norm. What is interesting to me is how it gets explained away (e.g. revenge plots) and forgiven. How some of it is even construed as romantic. How much of these values do we then internalize unknowingly?

Anyway, this may not be the place for this discussion. The setting of the drama is gorgeous and Mark Chao’s acting is superb. Thanks again for all your hard work.

        • You’re missing the details and are making assumptions based on partial information. So to say it’s abuse by the male lead, and that viewers somehow think abuse is romantic, is grossly inaccurate. He risks his life to orchestrate his own death in order to be with her, he gets struck by lightning in exchange for her only losing her eyes instead of her life, he jumped down the hell hole to save her even though he knew he would likey die (while she simply thought she was returning to the mortal realm by jumping, therefore she wasn’t suicidal).

I personally neither watch characters suffer for the sake of future vengeance nor do I think abuse is normalized. But if they suffer, then it’s natural I expect justice to be paid, and that expectance keeps me sane while the batshit melo goes on.

  23. So I was roped into watching this from a friend and it’s totally sucked in my life. After reading your words on the novel that shall not be named I’m starting to see and understand why I have absolutely no interest in the main couple at all. Like, I enjoy them, and the actors are doing a fantastic job, but I’m not surprised that I’m way more attached to DH and FJ beyond my usual love of secondary couples. DH and FJ were just written better and deserve my love. (please dear gods don’t let me hear plagiarism stuff about the Pillow Books… I might just cry)

I’d watched Les Interpretes and HATED Gao Vengo, but apparently all you need to do for me to fall in love with a person is slap on a really long haired white wig and I’m in love. Because we are in love. Every time the drama references his being “not interested in such things as lust” or some variation thereof I just die of laughter. That’s not the Donghua Dijun *I’m* familiar with. He’s a perv and I lurv him.

I’d heard that this was going to go into more of DH and FJ’s story in the drama, but not in the movie. Since it’s now almost over (if not fully subbed) can anyone confirm this for me? That was their excuse for having such top billed actors as side characters. I’d be totally down for a sequel that *really* went into The Pillow Books, because they are beautiful and totally blew me away (I read your translations and finished both of them in 10 days). But part of me thinks that with some of the narrative choices they’ve made in the early part of their relationship means that won’t happen and that makes me sad.

I actually really like Alan Yu, but I watched Go Princess Go, so I was already in love with him as the prettiest boy (whom I’m very convinced is in a relationship with Zhe Yan… back me up here).

    • Really? what did I say about the book? Aside from the plagiarism (BAD), I have always liked YH and BQ’s story. Are you referring to the review a guest blogger wrote on the blog?

No, PB doesn’t get built into this drama due to copyrights issues. They changed a lot of it and cut it short (and… spoiler… left it open ended). They are just promoting the actor/actress because they are from Yang Mi’s management company. They have lots of screen time to worth their while, but if you want to watch a proper PB adaptation, this isn’t it.

Ahaha yes, 4th ge and Zhe Yan are a couple. It’s insinuated in the book, and later confirmed in PB, and is basically insinuated again in the drama. I love those two. I also liked Alan from GPG, but that was not exactly drama exemplar to begin with. Only Zhang Tian’ai was acting her life out. With that said, Alan really grew on me towards the end. I think he relaxed and went with the flow better. I like the insouciant glances he gives whenever he talks to Zhe Yan haha.

    • I dunno tbh. Companies usually favor their own actors. Of course they can still cast someone outside of their agencies (Mark Chao doesn’t belong to Yang Mi’s team), but as you can see this last drama had many people from Yang Mi’s team including herself as the female lead.

      • I noticed she likes to have her team in a lot of her dramas. Which, I think is commendable of her. Gives them a lot of exposure. I truly hope that hopefully the other company at least hires Vengo and Dilraba as the main leads. It’s sad though that YM didn’t but the rights to the pillow books as well. I know they would have made that drama just as beautiful.

I just finished watching thIs drama…. and fell in love with the Dong Hua and Feng Jiu couple….. so much that I spent nearly 2 hours searching if there was going to be a sequel with them as the focus…. then realised there is the pillow book with their story…. just downloaded it and am going to start on that …. I wish if there was a drama adaptation DH and FJ would be played by the same characters who played them in this drama….. but then again I guess that’s just my wishful thinking…..

  31. I just recently got introduce to the 3l3w universe. It is good. Thanks for all the hard work in translating. I just wanted to say, you don’t really get the writing on hand scenes in dramas anymore now a days. They used to be popular. But then again I don’t really remember what other dramas had scenes like this. Overall the drama did a good job of depicting each character’s emotions. When MC cries he really gets to me and I start to cry.
