  1. Thanks for this Hamster! Appreciate the time and effort you put in to this translation. I love the Feng-Hua couple the best. 🙂

I saw these were hosted on a paid portal. I do feel that it’s much better that you post them on your own site instead of letting others profit off of your hardwork.

  2. I don’t even know if I should post this here… I don’t want to step on old wounds.
Still, if there’s people who keep asking you for the ‘novel that shall not be named’ file, just tell them there exists an official, published version now (To the Sky Kingdom, translated by Poppy Toland), and they can buy it on amazon if they really want to read it. Then they can leave you in peace. 🙂
Or would that constitute indirect advertising for the published version?… Argh, I’m so torn. I want the existing official translations of romance C-novels to be successful, so that we can get more (like, I’d pay an obscene amount for an official “Minglan” translation), but why did they have to go and pick the ‘novel that shall not be named’ for this honor!? There are so many [better] ORIGINAL books that would’ve been a much better choice for the publisher.

      • Dear Hamster,

Thank you so much for all your hard work that you put into translating the Pillow Book. I am enjoying it very much even though I originally came to your site to get the 3L3W translations.

As my obsession started with the TV drama series of 3L3W that I saw countless times. I was desperate to read the book so I could uncover all aspects of of the characters (especially internal thoughts that TV can’t portray). Honestly, I was very disappointed to learn that the Toland translated version seemed so vague and abbreviated. The TV drama series have extensive details on many of the characters that the book seemed missing….

On a related note, I also read all your responses to the reasons why you stopped publishing your translated 3L3W book. I was dumbfounded to learn of the plagiarism. I do hope that the next few stories that continue will truly be the author’s original work. I look forward to your translations of Moyuan’s story.

While on this topic, I am so intrigued as to whether Bai Qian recognizes Moyuan loves her as a woman or she is ignorant of it……

        With utmost respect, Amy Kwan

    • Thankyou so much for mentioning the published version on amazon! I’m gladly making my purchase!

The plagiarism controversial is very upsetting but I just can’t help hunting down the book as I am a huge fan of the Pillow Books that hamster translated and uploaded.

      • Hi Vanessa. Did you buy the Pillow Books in English? Where did you go? I went to Amazon but the Pillow Books was in Chinese. Like you I am a big fan of the Pillow Books and been searching for the books in English for a while now so I can purchase the books. I already bought the sky kingdom by poppy toland.
A heartfelt thank to hamster428 for translating the two Pillow Books. Thank you so much for your hard work and effort.

  3. Umm, okay. But really? That’s… I mean, the Kindle version is really affordable. And considering how MUCH work goes into such a translation project… Yep, I have no words.
I’m just grateful that you, and people like you, haven’t gotten discouraged and quit fan translations, seeing how much entitlement and cr*p you have to wade through in the process. Thank you, really.

      • The novel I was talking about is “3Lives, 3Worlds, 10000Miles…” And yep, Kindle version means Amazon. I wrote above in an earlier comment, you can just go to Amazon and do a search for “To the Sky Kingdom Poppy Toland” (that’s the title the publisher used for this particular translation, and the translator). I would rather not write a direct link here since we’re on hamster’s site, and I don’t want to offend, considering her feelings about this particular book. Thank you for understanding.

  6. Thank you so much for translating this! I really love this couple. I feel like volume 1 had a decent pace throughout but Aranya arc was excessively draggy in volume 2 and then the author really rushed the ending. Is that the final ending? I felt like she tortured the couple so much and for that to be the end is kinda sad since it was pretty abrupt and we don’t really get to see many happy moments of them together. TT

  9. I’d like to say my apologies first to Hamster about this. T-T

I’d like to ask if any of you had an ebook of Three Lives, Three World or 10 Miles of Peach Blossom? I recently (in mid 2016) became a fan of ancient C-Dramas and I’ve been hooked with this drama since General and I. I’ve been reading ebooks, too. I heard that this is based from a novel (just like General and I. And OMG, I really loved it. I love the book so much!). Please. If any of you have a copy of it, can you send me? The one with the English translation. TT-TT I tried ordering the book from Fullybooked (since I cant order from Amazon), they said they can give me the update if they can order it 2 weeks from now. I can’t wait!! Huhuhuhu. Please. Help me. T-T

Even if I asked my friend to borrow her credit card and buy the books. There is so much possibilty that the books can not get in through my country.

  16. First, thank you so much for spending time doing this. They’re beautifully formatted!

I read both books and due to the plagiarism concerns, I am a bit skeptical. I could have sworn I read the ending to book two starting with the wedding scene to the complete end elsewhere. Like I got a sense of serious deja vu reading it and I’m trying to place where. Hmm. It could just be deja vu but I really do feel that I’ve already read it before. Perhaps in a fan fiction and not an actual published book. Anyway, thank you so much again! They were wonderful reads.

    • Hah I wouldn’t be surprised. Fans had commented on a few similarities but they weren’t as conclusive and damning as the other novel, so I’m willing to share this one for the time being. Glad you enjoyed it.

      • I made my boyfriend get the Amazon translation so that he could enjoy it with me, but now I realize that watching the drama would be enough. Makes me feel a bit icky since he bought it. Although, in one of my psychology classes about memory, I learned it is completely possible to plagiarize without ever realizing you’re doing it. I’ll link an article about it here. It’s 10000% food for thought, not evidence in support of the author.

        http://nymag.com/scienceofus/2015/01/sam-smith-and-accidental-plagiarism.html

As for the PBs, it is still eating away at me because Chapter 20 to the end felt completely familiar to me. All of it gave me serious deja vu. I am trying to rack my brain to see if I can come up with where this similarity may have come from. It is even more odd considering that this is the only Chinese (translated) book that I’ve read so if I were to have read this ending elsewhere, it wouldn’t have been a Chinese book.

        • Yeah, the unintentionally borrowing ideas happens to the best of us. I absolutely can believe that. But I do not for one second believe it to be the case ith particular book. There are lines that get repeated word for word. Many of them. Plot points, names, themes – very specific to very broad things, all there. And the kicker is that she is a self-proclaimed fan of the other author and that she had “borrowed her style” and written this book as an ode to the other author. Then was this meant to be a fan fic of some sort? But by the time it got famous, she has no qualms publishing it claiming all she ever stolen was “style”. That’s what gets me roiling. If I claim I am a fan, I would know that writer’s work well enough to recognize the types of things I could have stolen. It wouldn’t have been accidental, esp on that scale. That author’s works wouldn’t have been read by me in passing, they would’ve left more impression in my memory and therefore I would know that “You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you” is Jane Austen’s and can never be mine.

And this one is really bizarre because of how obvious it is. There is a lot of plagiarism out there that never gets caught because ppl are smart enough to disguise it. True story: I copied my own codes and changed it enough to let my friend use it for homework. Same syntax, different wording. He didn’t bother to change his codes before handing it to a third friend. They got caught and I did not.

Lmk if you ever thought of the book that reminds you of PB. I would love to know.

          • Yeah I didn’t doubt that she plagiarized since she mentioned being a fan. I read your original post on it. It is completely crazy to me that more action wasn’t taken TBH. It really sucks because I love the story so so much but then feel so disappointed by it. I will definitely get back to you if I ever remember what the PB reminds me of.

Also I can’t really find news about it in English, but do you happen to know any updates about her 3rd and 4th books?

            Thanks!

I lost the PDF File of the Bookthatshallnotbenamed, which I’d saved for private use when my dumb driver crashed! * cries and wails* It holds dear memories of mine and never fails to invoke nostalgia, making me remember the good ol’ days when C-Novels Translation Blogs-Circuit was smaller and more intimate with each other… *sighs*
I know I’m grating old wounds by asking this, but could you please send me a copy of the book? I know there’s an “official” version on Amazon, and I did buy it (the paperback one). But it just doesn’t mean anything to me. The words that you typed up were the ones that stirred my heart and manage to make me laugh and cry.

  25. Dear Hamster,

Thanks so much for all your hard work! These are excellently translated! As a native reader of English and a poor reader of Chinese, getting these in English was definitely a relief). Of course I saw your post about Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms, but I really wanted to read the book. I ended up buying the Toland translation (and I guess that means some of that money goes to Tang Qi, which is too bad if she plagiarized it). From what I know of your skill from the Pillow books, I imagine that your translation would have been better than Toland’s — I didn’t really like her style very much; your language is much more bearable. Anyway, excellent work on the Pillow books! Thank you so much!

  26. Thank you, Hamster for sharing this translation. I really enjoyed reading the two parts. Thank you so very much for allowing me to follow my favorite couple in the story again!!! Though some of the changes made in the TV series threw me off for a bit there, since I didn’t read any versions of the first book. I pretty much finished the story in one day after finding it here. This series has me wanting to learn more Chinese, though I think it will be a very long time before I will be able to read a book like this one in Chinese.

I just found the show with the English subtitles, and am going through a little withdrawal after finishing the series. I’m sad to read that I missed your version of the story. From what I’ve read in the posted pdf, I really enjoyed your writing/translation style. Personally, I feel like non-professional versions that come from the heart are often better than the professional ones (sometimes a lot of the context or information seem to get lost in translation).

Now, to find other similar stories… Does anyone have any suggestions? 🙂

  29. Hello hamster! Just wanted to express my sincere and heartfelt thanks for all your time and dedication! I’m a native English speaker/reader so would never have been able to experience such a wonderful story had you not put all that effort into translating it. I don’t know what the original TangQi PB is like but I thoroughly enjoyed your version. I even loved the footnotes — and your additional commentary! (Then again, I do have a thing for footnotes!) I had read a few pages of To the Sky Kingdom through Amazon before starting this book, but decided against it. Reading the preview of TtSK at the time, I was quite disappointed and knew I would struggle to get through it all. Even though this is a different book, I do think your translation style is far superior (to that of PT). It’s a shame that your translation of Ten Miles is no longer available (although I do understand your reasons and agree that it is absolutely the right thing to do). I’m sure that it too would have been a joy to read.

In any case, thanks once again for all your work on this. I thought you did a superb job! The sleep deprivation over the last 4 days has been oh so worth it 🙂
