Chapter 112: My Dear Sir, You Haven’t Changed

At this despairing juncture, Chen Sanlang burst into tears and continued to drunkenly blabber on.

A few questions later and after finding that she could not retrieve much information from him, Chen Rong then saw several servants hastening over. The nobility had always, for hundreds of years, followed the golden rule of not disclosing their dirty laundry. Were the sky to fall down, appearances must still be kept in front of outsiders. Those servants must be rushing over for the reason that they feared Chen Sanlang would spout nonsense in his drunken stupor.

She got up and whispered to the restaurant owner, “Uncle, can I trouble you to help him out and take him to his servants?”

He was more than willing to be troubled, having received the gold leaves earlier.

By the time they reached the door, several men had arrived to retrieve Chen Sanlang. They turned to look at Chen Rong but she had, at this point, retreated to a corner where they could not make out her blurry face and vague figure.

Ran Min chuckled as he watched them leave. “Missy, did you get your wish?”

Chen Rong turned around, curtsied to him and happily replied, “Indeed, I did.” Chen Yuan had offended the Wang House of Lang’ya as well as the Prince of Nan’yang. He now could neither thrive in Jiankang nor Nan’yang.

And if Chen Yuan had fallen, then Chen Sanlang and Chen Wei both would lose their worth. Even Lady Ruan might find it difficult to remain in aristocratic society.

Chen Rong did not hide her satisfaction when she next faintly smiled.

Ran Min quietly watched her and again smirked from the shadows.

Noises stirred at this time.

There were shouts of cheer along with female squeals, rare as they were amid the city’s ongoing anxiety.

Ran Min raised his head while Chen Rong tottered to the door.

A horse-drawn carriage appeared on the street ahead.

Chen Rong stilled, and then broke into a slow smile.

Young men and women were surrounding the carriage. In the midst of their merry laughter, she heard Chen Qi exclaiming: “Qilang, Qilang, I know the barbarians’ siege has nothing to do with you. You mustn’t pay heed to what people say.”

Another young lady sweetly voiced: “With Qilang here, Nan’yang has nothing to worry about.”

What can a mere Murong Ke do,” a lad joined them, “when the Wang House in Lang’ya has innumerable troops?”

Comforting words ensued, all of them cheerful exclamations. As she watched the crowd’s ebullient faces, Chen Rong realized they truly believed in Wang Hong’s ability to avert the crisis.

At this time, Ran Min’s deep voice sounded behind her: “Uncle, even you don’t have any grievances towards Lang’ya Wang Qi?”

The restaurant owner good-naturedly replied, “All the scholars say Wang Qilang is reliable, so I reckon he must be.”

Upon hearing his words, Ran Min sighed in frustration. “Just because he’s Lang’ya Wang Qi? A world-renowned reputation, indeed!”

Chen Rong was still scanning the area.

She gazed through a sea of heads and colorful robes and dresses to find the man sitting inside the carriage.

As the vehicle moved, she occasionally caught a glimpse of his unclouded and lofty eyes. Even now, they were smiling ever so gently and serenely… His composure and nonchalance made his impending battle appear as if it was nothing more than a dinner banquet.

Eyes that could soothe others, that could make them smile along. Lulled into serenity herself, Chen Rong also unconsciously smiled as she sang, “Does the gentleman know of tranquil days.”

It was a very simple line and she had sang very offhandedly, yet her smiling eyes had begun to moisten.

At this time, the man inside the carriage suddenly turned to look in her direction.

Chen Rong started and retracted her head.

Merely casting a glance, however, he also withdrew his gaze and did not look towards her any longer.

Chen Rong heaved in relief, but at the same time, tasted something like bitterness in her mouth.

Clenching her teeth, she forced on a smile, determinedly turned around and walked back to the restaurant.

In a corner, the stalwart figure was looking up at the ceiling beams. Desolation and timeworn vicissitudes cast a shadow over his handsome face.

Chen Rong lowered her head, walked over and slowly sat down next to him.

She dropped her gaze to quietly stare at her own hands. Her eyes were glazed over, her mind elsewhere.

It was strikingly silent inside the restaurant .

Outside, noisy laughter merrily rang on.

Wang Hong at this moment spoke up from his carriage.

At once, the vehicle accelerated.

The encircling crowd automatically gave way. The youngsters retreated and made no more sound as they watched Wang Hong’s carriage dash ahead. They knew that Qilang must have many things to attend to, and that they must not distract him.

The carriage dashed to the restaurant.

Behind the curtain, the young man turned his head and carelessly glanced at the store. “Muzi.”

A young guard of twenty rode over. “Aye, master?”

The corner of Wang Hong’s mouth curved to speak in an amused voice, “Send someone to check that restaurant out. Be quick but also thorough; they may try to hide from you.”

Aye,” replied the guard before riding back.

No sooner had Wang Hong’s carriage left than Ran Min stood up to leave. He pushed down on his straw hat and ordered, “Let’s go.”

Aye.”

Chen Rong also pushed down on her hat and followed him out.

They had not reached the door when she suddenly stopped to exclaim: “It’s Old Shang!”

A carriage was heading this way, and who else could the elderly driver be but Old Shang?

Ran Min glanced at Chen Rong, who was expectantly watching him, but he did not stop.

Chen Rong rasped for breath even though she continued to follow him. Nonetheless, she kept turning around to look at Old Shang’s carriage.

The two of them came to an intersection.

Ran Min stopped. Chen Rong looked only to see him stand with his hands clasped behind his back, straight and tall, and quiet.

Meanwhile, Old Shang’s carriage was fast approaching.

Chen Rong suddenly understood his intention.

She stepped out and called in her clear voice: “Old Shang!”

Old Shang quickly looked up upon her call.

He detected her right away. Although she was donning a lad’s outfit, and wearing a hat, Old Shang only needed a glance to know that she was his mistress.

His eyes immediately reddened. His cracked lips quivered, wanting to call her name.

Don’t give me away,” she said.

There were few people on this part of the street. Even so, Chen Rong had lowered her voice when she spoke. Old Shang quickly sobered at her words. He raised his sleeves and wiped his tears that had begun to unknowingly spill.

Just as he reached her, a figure appeared next to Chen Rong. It was Ran Min. Without waiting for Old Shang to park, he had lifted the curtain and jumped up.

Chen Rong had not reacted by the time Ran Min reached out from the carriage and pulled her up by the arm.

He was so swift that he likewise gave Old Shang no time to react before Chen Rong’s eager voice reached him: “Old Shang, quick, tell me, how are things in the estate? How are all of you doing?”

Her retainer collected himself and answered: “Aye. The estate’s in a bit of a plight.”

How so?”

Chen Yuan, who else. I heard he botched some major business for the Nan’yang Prince and the Ruan family, angering both of them. The Prince had killed Lady Li’s brother out of rage and wanted to kill Chen Yuan as well. Chen Yuan had divorced his lesser madam in panic and gone to kneel in front of Chen Gongrang in a blubbering mess before he could be pardoned from death.”

Old Shang looked around and closed his mouth when he saw someone. Some time later when they got to a quiet place, he continued: “Ah Wei does nothing but cry these days. Lady Ruan’s family had announced that their ties are no more. Chen Yuan and his wife are locking themselves behind closed doors. You don’t know how bad it is right now. The servants all know your uncle had lost his standing. They don’t say anything, but the mood’s different. I heard the Nan’yang branch had held several meetings, wanting to throw their entire family out.”

At this juncture, Old Shang sighed, “Chen Yuan’s downfall also drags us with him. Luckily you aren’t here.”

Chen Rong kept quiet.

Of course she knew she would be implicated. She was Chen Yuan’s ward, and if the Chen House in Nan’yang were to expel Chen Yuan, they’d expel her as well.

Nevertheless, she cared little about such loss. At this very moment, her heart was only gushing with the satisfaction of revenge.

Suppressing her joy, Chen Rong looked towards Ran Min to see that he was closing his eyes in meditation, his dark brows knitting. She didn’t know what was going through his mind.

Watching him, Chen Rong thought to herself: What kind of story did he spread, exactly? So that Chen Yuan and Lady Ruan are in such dire straits?

Old Shang’s voice sounded on: “A few days ago, Lady Ruan had ordered to keep just one of us to look after our courtyard. The rest was to be dismissed. Luckily, Chen Gongrang had sent someone over. That man claimed you are kind and noble, and your servants can’t be scattered when your safety was yet known.” His voice took a gleeful turn: “And then he said there are people who do wrong, but take it out on others. Those are the lowest scum. Haha.”

Chen Rong came to understand at this point why Old Shang didn’t speak of Chen Yuan with any respect. It turned out there had been such an aria.

At this time, Old Shang couldn’t help but stop the carriage and turn back to say: “Miss, everyone in the clan thinks something has happened to you.” After a pause, he lowered his voice and hesitantly said, “Not one who went with you had returned. There are all sorts of rumors going around. I had cried for you more than once…” As he said this, he quietly stole a glance at Ran Min in the corner.

Sorry this is a short update. I really have been so swamped and tired. There’s organizational restructuring at work so there’s been a lot of transitioning scrambling in the past few months. Add to that a conference paper I had to submit before leaving for my vacation and my brain’s basically fried.

So yeah, vacation! That’s coming up next week and stretching into December so I might not see you guys again until January. I hope everyone’s holiday season will be safe and warm.

I haven’t done this in forever but I might as well in what is probably my year-end post. Where are my fellow drama watchers? What did you watch this year? I’m such a drama junkie haha, even if I rarely end up finishing anything I started.

CHINA:

Go Princess Go (Crown Princess’s Promotion) – wacky hilarity, and my discovery of Zhang Tian Ai. I hope you go far, beautiful one.

My Amazing Boyfriend – cute and interesting. So much more to my liking than You From Another Star. Season 2 would be awesome right about now.

Remembering Lichuan – The book was happier, even discounting the ending. But I can’t complain about having Godfrey on my screen.

Love O2O (Weiwei’s Smile) – I lament the middling chemistry, but it was still a lot of fun, esp that scene where Weiwei kicked ass at the meetup.

KOREA:

Reply 1988 – Taekie!

Cheese in the Trap – well that spiralled quickly.

Contract Marriage – I lost so much tears, so much!

Another Oh Hae Young – I can’t find her relatable. She was so insecure and angry and violent… and did she break someone’s window?

Descendants of the Sun – mindless swag. I still love you though Song Joong Ki.

Uncontrollably Fond – mindless angst. I still love you too, Woobie.

Cinderella and the Four Knights – ugh… what is Jung Il Woo doing with his career? I’m running out of free love to give.

Moonlight Drawn by Clouds – I wish they could’ve picked someone old enough to kiss. I’m old and jaded and do not buy chaste romance.

Moon Lovers – these people had their work handed to them on a platter and still managed to mess up. That’s some incompetence they’ve got.

W – you shouldn’t have bitten more then you can chew, writer-nim.

Gogh, the Starry Night – cute cute cute. Short and sweet.

Shopping King Louie – Seo In Guk and Nam Ji Hyun are gold. The rest is pretty standard.

On the Way to the Airport – good wine that went flat.

Something About 1% – I’m a slave to this little gem. I watch and rewatch episodes, refresh soompi, refresh tumblr, refresh dramabeans. Rinse and repeat. Airport wifi, I’m counting on you to stream the finale this week -_-

WEST:

Victoria – finished season 1. Good, but not addicting.

The Crown – still on ep 1. Can’t believe my boss got further than me.

ANIME:

Yuri on Ice – I think I’m on ep 2… wish I can generate more hours in a day.

  2. Thanks for the chapter. I’ve been watching The Princess Weiyoung. Its supposedly based on one of my favorite Chinese novels, The Princess Wei Yang. Its very different though. Its my first eastern live-action and I’m enjoying it.

  3. Thanks for the chapter. By the way, I laughed when I saw your opinions about some Korean dramas. I only knew Descendants of the sun, Moonlight Lovers and Cinderella and the Four Knights. Out of the three, I only watched one, which is Moonlight Lovers, and all I know is I want to butcher someone because it’s worse than the Chinese version.

  4. LOL those drama comments. I’m such a drama junkie as well and I have a tendency to not finish some of the dramas that I started… by a lot.
Go Princess Go was such love from end to start even if it had three endings. Definitely appreciate Zhang Tian Ai and replay the ending song so much when it was airing.
I seriously need to finish watching My Amazing Boyfriend. I totally love Janice, such a sweet and cute actress.
Remembering Lichuan – I had tears and a wee bit frustration here and there. Actually a lot, haha.
Wasn’t able to finish Love O2O, felt there was awkwardness between the otp, but Zheng Shuang tends to be awkward sometimes. Her legs 😱 I do like the game showdown between her and that mean girl the most. Girl gaming power 🙂
Have not watch reply 1988, but I’ve watched reply 1997. Does that count? 😀
Bless some of the drama beanies who watched Cheese in a Trap and commented that the show was going downhill.
Contact Marriage had me bawling even when I was reading recaps. Cancer stories always hit me the hardest. I feel bad for Oh Hae Young but besides the dancing parts, I got frustrated with her somehow. Skipped DOTS despite Song Joong Ki. I couldn’t get pass Suzy’s acting in UF. Jung Il Woo either has a bad manager or he sucks at picking projects.
Moonlight Drawn by Clouds – agree, the drama could have gone further with the love story and less angst lol.
Moon Lovers – I’m so pissed.
W – meh. The logic and stuff totally flew out.
Gogh, the Starry Night – I love it!
Shopping King Louie – Seo In Guk and Nam Ji Hyun ❤ Cute lost puppies and folks I wouldn't mind inviting to my house or becoming friends with.
Something About 1% – I still need to watch this.
Netflix is coming out with a lot of good shows. I'm so bad at keeping up. I need to tell my friend about Victoria since she likes British shows.
ANIME: Not liking this season lineups and despite smooth animation from Yuri On Ice, I wasn't as interested as much. Need to soak up the Winter Olympics more lol.
    Other drama:
The Man Living in Our House — I recommend just watching the first couple of episodes and waiting til the ending is reached because oh boy, not liking the complications. Cute couple though.

Thank you for the chapter and have a great vacation! Wishing you a warm and safe holiday vacation as well! 😀

    • You know, I blame the awkwardness on Yang Yang as well. I’ve only told peanuts this but I think he was more into himself than he was into Zheng Shuang lol
1997 counts into forever and infinity! Love the 97 crew
The Crown is Netflix, but Victoria’s ITV and will be on PBS in January in the US.
Oh I forgot I watched a few eps of The Man Living in Our House. It was cute but my interest is a fickle mistress haha
Oh man I love real life figure skating. But I haven’t gotten into YoI while my non-figureskating-fans friends Love the anime with a capital L. So much that they’re asking for YoI merchandise when we’ll be there in Japan this month.
Go watch 1%!!! It’s only 30 min per ep, and so full of cuteness it will just fly by.

I watched Love 020 a few days ago and loved it to pieces, it does have a lot of flaws and I didn’t think I’d like it, but it made me really happy and I enjoyed it so much.

Gogh, the Starry Night was really cute and nice too ^^

Don’t get me started on Moon Lovers… just ugh.

You really deserve a vacation, hopefully you’ll feel better soon!

I used to be such a heavy k-drama watcher but I fell off the past few years. There were times I couldn’t even finish one drama. But this year is different as I have watched a couple of dramas even though I find myself watching more American dramas than Korean/Chinese
Korean: Six flying dragons, Liar Game, Bad guys, Missing Noir M, struggling to finish Pied Piper.
Chinese: Nirvana on Fire, Singing All Along, the Empress of China

Enjoy your holiday and see you next year

  10. Thank you so much for the new chapter…lol..it seems we do have similar taste when it comes to dramas…though I have to admit that I never droppped so many dramas like I did this year..most of all astonishingly many dramas with great actors…but the scripts were really bad or the chemistry was simply lacking:

    Chinese dramas:
Go Princess Go – ohh..this one was hilarious..for me..in my head I chose the ending where they are together in the future as a m/m pairing…
Addicted / Heroin- gah..the Chinese government and film industry..I still want my second season
My Amazing Boyfriend -aww…this was so cute
Thinking of Lu Xiang Bei – nice watch
Rookie Agent Rouge – somehow I expected more..more romance..and the main heroine annoyed me lots of times, she was too cocky for me
Love O2O – agh…finally a guy that knows how to kiss and we only get another girl that is a wood block…why oh why..O_O..it is a lovely light drama
Princess Jieyou – why oh why did Viki change its rules…now I doubt it will be fully subbed..I love this drama…

    Korea:
The K2..lol..seriously..was there a difference of opinion between scriptwriter, director and the editing crew..lol…I know who the main couple was supposed to be was…but I couldn´t help myself jumping and staying on the wrong ship..the music that was used, the slow motion scenes..I am a Kim Je Ha + Choi Yoo Jin shipper
Beautiful Mind – why did they cut it short..this was a brillant drama
Go Ho’s Starry Night – I love this drama and have rewatched it twice already
Please Come Back, Mister – jep..this is one of those dramas with great actors..I tried it three times…but I dropped it over and over again
On The Way To The Airport – One big suprised!!!! I despise dramas with cheating…but this is such a wonderful and calm drama…with such a wonderful couple and such a nice ending… – I love it.
Mirror of the Witch – dropped..wow..this drama and its plot was not moving forward, such a great start…then it got boring and just everything was the same
Beautiful Gong Shim – cute One-Time
Marriage Contract – another big surprise…I dislike melos..but awww…I was crying buckets and will rewatch it…this is like “Scent of a Woman” for me..
Doctors – finally a drama without annoying breakups and annoying, scheming women
Descendants of the Sun – ok..I expected more…but I just love the 2 male actors
Signal – finally a great crime drama
Another Miss Oh -aww…they are just cute
Shopping King Louie – I wanted too like it…but it is too silly for my taste
    Something About 1% – aww..I just love it ..

    Thailand:
Padiwaradda – I love this lakorn
Look Mai Klai Ton – what a disappointment..I was so looking forward to the remake, I love Andrews version..but this new one..no thanks
Sotus – Ah..another wonderful drama for my BL heart…and also finally one with good actors

    Japan:
Please Love the Useless Me – aww..I didn´t expect much, but it grew on me with each episode
Good Morning Call – a cute drama
Nigeru wa Haji da ga Yaku ni Tatsu – this drama is still airing, but I love its format and hope that it will stay great until the last minute of the last episode

    Anime:
Yuri on Ice – aww…I am loving loving loving it….I even started reading fanfics…
Days – I just like it..
Baby Steps – ok..it really surprised me in a good way
Natsume Yuujinchou Go – this is one anime series, that never gets old..I love its calm atmosphere…it is wonderful to just lean back, watch it and relax.

  13. I dont know why theyre trying so hard to make Chen Gongrang out to be a good guy, if he had used even the slightest bit of effort the dicks wouldnt have been able to sell her to the prince
He allowed them to constantly harass and try to rob her as well

    Like

    • Chen Gongrang isn’t a good guy, and nobody is saying he is. As the head of the clan, he is at best neutral since his job is to prioritize the entire clan’s welfare above all else. It’s not his place to interfere in a relative’s family affairs.
Also note that this is 4th century China. Moral codes regarding women are that she shall listen to her guardians. Guardian = Chen Yuan. Whatever Chen Gongrang may think of Chen Yuan’s deeds, I bet he also believes it’s Chen Yuan’s perogatives.

  17. I finally caught up with the translation! Yay!
Thank you for all your hard work, Hamster! I’m half-Chinese who never bothered to learn Chinese. But now that I’m into C-novels, I’m starting to regret dropping the language huhuhu.

I like the story but still think the development is quite slow plot-wise. So far there have only been scheming after scheming, without other things moving so I’m waiting to see if there will be interesting turns of events later. I got a little irritated that our heroine seems to be everyone’s target of sh*t-throwing though. Other than the three male dudes, no one has even been nice to her and she gets trashed here and there throughout 100+ chapters. I hope she got recognition she deserves in the end.

As far as shipping goes, my heart still couldn’t accept either WH or RM. I don’t hate them but I don’t love them either. RM is being very compelling though these past few chapters. Make my heart swoon. WH needs a lot more screen time to swing me back to his ship hehehe.

Regarding the drama list, I just finished Love 020 not long ago. Love every bit of it. I just prefer it when the leads are logical and mature and smart. I also agreed the OTP was kinda awkward though. But overall still my fave c-drama of 2016 (not that I watched a lot though :P) I’m reading the translation of Princess Wei Yang, so that’s the next drama I’ll probably pick up. I heard it’s totally different from the novel though. But since the translation would take years to finish, I might as well check it out.

Wish you a merry christmas and happy new year! Enjoy your holiday!

    • Hi, I’m pretty busy so I can’t reply to all of your comments but I want to say that reading them makes my day! I watched Princess Weiyoung with my aunt while I was vacationing in Asia because she follows it… and yeah, nothing like the novel. So much family infighting, even more than here in MGQ.
As for MGQ’s slow movement, I think it’s because of the genre. Many people categorize this novel into 田文 though it’s not quite that. 田文 lit. means “farming literature,” which is slice-of-life, today this happens in my mundane country life, then this happens and this happens. Obv they don’t live on a farm but you can think of these as weekend family kdramas. They are long and can be tedious if you’re not the intended audience.
You may or may not like the rest of it but thank you for reading thus far. Merry xmas to you as well!

      • I know I have probably been spamming you a lot with my belated comments lol
Didn’t expect to see your reply since you said you’re on vacation but sooo happy to see it. Nice to meet you, Hamster!

I think when I first jumped on board I kinda expected MGQ to be a story about battle of wits and politics, which it is… on CR’s part. But because the stresses on family bg and moral reputation and certain hypocrisy, it gets boring sometimes. I mean, how much a person needs to prove themselves to be recognized? Ran Min is called a Heavenly Prince and is the prime reason they’re not yet all killed, but he’s still being insulted as a commoner. Chen Rong saves a lot of people’s ass time and again, but she’s still regarded as a lowly concubine-born. They were treated like trash but when a problem arise, those cunts run back to them… Urgh! So frustrating!

Isn’t there a saying that a mountain needs not be high for a dragon to live in? (or something like that, my chinese skill sucks) Or maybe I just watched too many dramas where family bg and stuff doesn’t count much and only talents prevail.

Anyway, I’ll stop ranting now lol. See you in January (hopefully with new updates kekeke)

        • Nice to meet you too, Owl!

What I liked about this novel when I initially read it, and even now, is that even when the characters aren’t perfect and the plot events are far (and I mean far) from ideal, they’re still very consistent to the characters’ personalities and the times’ circumstances and environment. It’s not serious historical writing or anything, but this book is like a study into the social constructs of medieval China which I find fascinating to read.

For ex, Heavenly Prince is a Hu title, and the Hans have no regard for it. They mainly hold him in contempt because his family was originally Han but had adopted a Hu surname, so he has lost his roots, so to speak. Which is a really big deal even in today’s society. Asian parents are always harping on and on about learning our mother tongue and culture and history. I agree it’s frustrating, but I think their treatment of him and Chen Rong is very in line with 3rd century China.

Can’t say it’ll get much more exciting later on if you already find it boring at this stage haha. I won’t be sad if you drop it.

I’ve “discovered” the wealth of Asian shows this year (Hollywood Schmollywood, Asian film making is really excellent) Some new favorites are:
The Fierce Wife (starts kinda silly but really deals with lots of cultural issues)
The Beauty Inside (beautifully sensitive movie)
    Black (K drama series)
    Shadow (Chinese film)
    Us and Them (bittersweet film)
    The Handmaiden (K drama)
